It’s important to have a GOOD anti-virus program running on your computer. In my serach for an efficient, cheap anti-virus software, I stumbled upon a couple of FREE ones on the internet. Both of them really turned me on – extremely reliable, efficient and best of all, FREE! I’m sure there must be many more out there, but I’m satisfied with what I have.
The first one I came across was AntiVir, available on www.freeav.com. Neat, no frill and fancies, and effective. I used it for almost 2 years, and had no reason to complain. They update the virus definitions almost daily, but at times it’s difficult to access their update server. Recently they upgraded their search engine to ver. 7, and I started facing problems with downloading the updated version (Partially due to the fact that I use a slow dial-up connection). I was left with an older version of the program which made me feel very vulnerable.
That’s when I dared to experiment. My next savior came in the form of AVG – a product of Grisoft. Can be downloaded from free.grisoft.com, is easy to use and best of all, has auto update facility. AVG has an email scanner as well, so any emails coming in to my default mail client are secure. Another feature that interested me about AVG is that it starts it’s scan from the moment you power on your computer (it has a DOS based scan engine built-in).
So far, I’m satisfied with AVG. Of course, I’m going to shuttle between these two softwares, just for kicks! One point I forgot to mention, though – both these softwares are free for personal use only. For commercial use, you’d have to purchase them. But, very convenient for home users like me. And yes, both of them have (free) Linux versions as well!
